For a lot of gaming, crypto and iGaming brands, paid ads are a fight. Half the campaigns get rejected before they run (we mapped exactly where each vertical can advertise). Owned communities don’t have that problem. Nobody reviews your Discord server. Nobody demonetizes your Telegram channel. You own the audience and the relationship — and it compounds.
This is how to build one that grows instead of going quiet after week two.
Why owned channels win in these verticals
- No ad review. Your product is legal where it operates and your community is yours to run. That alone makes Discord and Telegram the most reliable channels for skin, crypto and iGaming brands.
- They compound. A paid campaign stops the day you stop paying. A community that’s healthy keeps growing and keeps converting.
- They’re where the audience already lives. Gaming and crypto natives organize on Discord and Telegram by default. You’re joining a habit, not creating one.
Discord vs Telegram: pick by behavior, not preference
| Discord | Telegram | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Gaming communities, roles, events, real-time hangout | Crypto/announcements, RU/CIS and MENA reach, broadcast |
| Structure | Channels, roles, bots, voice | Channels (broadcast) + groups (chat) |
| Strength | Depth and retention | Speed, scale and reach |
| Weakness | Intimidating for newcomers | Shallow engagement, spam/bots |
Most brands in this space need both: Discord as the home base, Telegram as the announcement and acquisition layer — especially in RU/CIS and MENA, where Telegram is a primary channel, not a secondary one.
The structure that keeps people
Empty servers die. Over-built servers scare people off. The middle:
- A three-second onboarding. New members should understand what the server is and what to do in their first message, not scroll 40 channels. Gate with a simple verify step to kill bots.
- Few channels, clear purpose. Start with 5–7 channels, not 30. Add channels when the community demands them, never before.
- Roles that mean something. Roles for real actions (verified, active, OG, contributor) give status and unlock moderation leverage.
- A reason to come back daily. Events, drops, a weekly ritual, patch talk. Retention beats acquisition — a member who shows up daily is worth 50 who joined and muted.
Growth loops that actually work
Buying members is a waste. These compound instead:
- Creator-to-community. Every creator activation should funnel to the server, not just to a landing page. This is where clipping campaigns pay double — reach and community growth.
- Referral and invite rewards. Tie roles, drops or entries to inviting real, active members. Reward retention of invitees, not raw invite count, or you’ll farm bots.
- Drops and giveaways gated on participation. In-game items, whitelist spots, exclusive access — the same mechanic that cut AB InBev’s cost per register to €0.32, run inside your own channel.
- Cross-post the best community content. UGC from members, clipped and reposted, pulls their networks in.
Moderation is the product
A community is only as good as its worst hour. For crypto especially, scams, impersonation and spam are constant. Non-negotiables:
- Verification gates and anti-raid bots from day one.
- A clear, pinned set of rules and a visible mod team.
- Impersonation protection — pin official links, warn about DMs, lock announcement channels.
- Fast, human moderation during launches and drops, when scammers show up first.
Measure it like a channel, not a vanity metric
Member count is the least useful number. Track:
- Active members (posted/reacted in the last 7 days), not total.
- Retention of new joiners past day 7.
- Conversions from community to product, with a tracked link or code.
- Message velocity as a health signal.
A 10,000-member server with 400 daily actives beats a 100,000-member ghost town every time.
